A Singer Sang A Song Lyrics – Eddie Morton

Singer: Eddie Morton
Title: A Singer Sang A Song

A Singer Sang a Song, sung by Ed Morton, Edison records
I attended a party, and the party was a plum
So I took her to a party; for a party, she was fun
Then a party at this party, said to all the parties there

“There’s a party at this party who can sing a song for fair!”
So a singer sang a song
And here’s the song the singer sang
Don’t you like the swing?

’tis a pretty thing
Now, it so happened that the party who was there to sing
Was the party who had came to the party with me
And as she was a very sociable party

She arose and sang the following selection:
“I care, not for the stars that shinе!
I dare not hope to e’еr be thine!
I only know, I—”

*Cat noises*
(Morton)
Here, here, here! Cat! Cat!
*Audience laughter*

(Morton)
I am insulted! I’m going to take my [steed?]!
A singer sang a song and that’s
The song the singer sang!

And a [?] named Susie was [?]
So that [?] suited Susie; they soon made the [?]
Then the [?] said she’d start a suit, and for a suit she’d [?]
And for [?] Susie there, was just one thing to do

So a singer sang a song
And here’s the song the singer sang
Don’t you like the swing?
’tis a pretty thing

Oh, well, how do you Mrs Stacy? I’m awfully glad to see you
Yes, I had a dreadful time getting down here
You know, my father started drinking again last week
Oh, yes, he fell off of the water-wagon

I don’t know how he could overlook this party
Him and Mr Stacy are such good friends
He’ll be awfully mad when he finds out [the free drinks business?]
Will I sing a song? Well, I’ve got such a bad cold!

I was sitting in front of a window last night
Didn’t have sense enough to get out of the draught!
*Coughs*
Well, if you insist, I’ll try!

Is my hat on straight, Mrs Stacy?
Alright, professor!
“My mother was a lady
An alder—”

*Coughs*
There, I told you I couldn’t sing!
Yes, I’m awfully sorry, Mrs Stacy, yes, goodbye
A singer sang a song and that’s

The song the singer sang!
Then our host, Mr Casey, said, in case it could be done
He would send a case of cased goods up in case we needed one
’twas a case of cheer from Casey, nobody there refused

And then Casey said, “in any case, we’d have to be amused!”
So a singer sang a song
And here’s the song the singer sang
Don’t you like the swing?

’tis a pretty thing
Now, someone asked Casey if he wouldn’t sing a song!
Casey said, “I’d sing a song! I had sang at a party last week.”
And he sang the following song:

“H, A, double-R, I
G, A, N, you see
It’s a name that a shame never have been connected with
Harrigan—”

(Audience member 1)
What do you want?!
(Morton)
Hear, hear, what are you bustin’ up me song for?!

(Audience member 1)
Come on out and have a drink!
(Morton)
I’m not go out and have a drink!

All those in favour of me singing a song, say “aye”!
(Audience member 2)
Aye!
(Morton)

All those in favour of goin’ out and having a drink, have a “hooray”!
(Entire audience)
Hooray!
(Morton)

Oh, no…
A singer sang a song and that’s
The song the singer sang!
Then the host, Mr Casey, wrote and asked me if I wouldn’t sing a song

I politely said, “good-night!”
